Iceland

Capital: Reykjavík

Fire, ice, sagas, and the world's oldest parliament.

Daily life

Winter is dark and cozy — hot pools (sundlaug) are the daily social ritual, used like cafés. Summer never gets dark. Nearly everyone is on first-name terms (there are no family surnames — only patronymics like Jónsdóttir). Belief in elves and hidden folk is part of the cultural backdrop.

Food

  • Lamb soup (kjötsúpa)
  • Skyr (ancient yogurt-like dairy)
  • Rúgbrauð (geothermal-baked rye)
  • Plokkfiskur (fish stew)
  • Hákarl (fermented shark — for the brave)

Family values

Small, egalitarian families. Iceland leads the world in gender equality and has had multiple women presidents and PMs.

Religion & spiritual life

Predominantly Lutheran (Church of Iceland), but practice is light and many Icelanders blend old Norse and folk beliefs into daily life.
