Capital: Sana'a

Arabia Felix — frankincense lands, mud skyscrapers, and ancient queens.

Daily life

Afternoons gather around qat chews and conversation. Old Sana'a's gingerbread tower houses are inhabited and lived-in, not museums. Coffee was first cultivated for export in Yemen — the word 'mocha' comes from the port of Mokha.

Food

  • Saltah (national stew)
  • Mandi (slow-cooked lamb and rice)
  • Fahsa
  • Bint al-sahn (honey bread)
